This in-class worksheet helps students understand the concept of " like terms" by looking at "terms" represented as areas and volumes, where constants are represented by multiples of 1x1 unit squares, terms like x or 3x are represented as areas of 1 by x or 3 by x rectangles. A term like x squared is represented by the area of a square of side x. Students are then asked to add like terms. (rectangles of like areas or prisms of like volumes). My students truly developed a good understanding of terms after this lesson. Its also is a great medium for discussing parts of a polynomial: terms, constants, coefficients, order of the terms, etc.
