This is an application scenario in which students work with a third degree polynomial function that models the depth of water in a lake. Students will find the times at which the lake reaches a specific depth, the average rate of change of the depth of water in the lake over a specific time interval, the time at which the lake reaches relative minimum and maximum depths, and more. This application is intended for Pre-AP students and addresses both average and instantaneous rate of change.
