This is a Geometer's Sketchpad file which contains 3 pages (in addition to the intro page). The goal behind this file is to check for the understanding of the end behavior of any given polynomial function. Here is a description of each of the three pages:
Page 1: Graph to End Behavior
Students are asked to look at 4 different graphs (one at a time) and determine whether the graph is even or odd and whether the graph has a positive leading coefficient or a negative leading coefficient.
Page2: End Behavior Hands On
Students will look visualize the end behavior by using the "hands" method
Page 3: End Behavior to Graph
Students are asked to describe the behavior of each of the 4 given functions and move their hands appropriately. Then, an answer is provided in addition to the graph itself to support the answer.
This lesson is used to check on a comprehensive understanding of the end behavior of a polynomial function. Students are fully engaged in this "recap" of the topic as they finally manage to bring together their understanding of the topic and visualizing it.
How could I use this file?
Students could work on this in their centers, groups, pairs, individually, as a homework, using dry/erase boards, using communicators, as a whole class, or in any other format. This lesson is also provided as a PDF file. However, using GSP will enhance the objectives of this lesson.
The teacher will be turning on/off functions, graphs, and diagrams to check for understanding of the topic. Several buttons were created in a way to help study the questions one at a time. A "Reset" button is available to clear the page. Some familiarity with GSP is needed to fully take advantage of this file. On a final note, work with one question at a time, when turning a question on, please turn it back off to allow for a good analysis of each of the functions.
