This lesson is meant to be used as guided notes for a whole class.
Students begin by learning exactly what it means to square a binomial: It does NOT mean just square both terms! After squaring two binomials, they discover the general rule for squaring sums and differences. After using this to square some more binomials, they begin multiplying a sum and its difference. Again, they discover a new rule and then practice some problems. Finally, 2 of the 3 rules that they have learned are modeled by algebra tiles to help them better visualize what is happening. In summary, the three rules learned are:
Square of a Sum (a+b)^2
Square of a Difference (a-b)^2
Product of a Sum and a Difference (a+b)(a-b)
