This collaborative activity can be tailored to fit the needs of your students. There are 30 pennants in the entire activity. The first 20 can be used alone for a younger group of Algebra students. This first activity - multiplying and adding polynomials - is presented in terms of area and perimeter. Space is given on these pennants for students to set up the area method for multiplying the two given polynomial side lengths.
A 10-pennant extension activity for adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing and composing is also included. On these additional pennants, polynomials are presented in function notation. A 2-page answer sheet and an answer key are included. Once each pennant is complete, it can be hung on a string in your classroom to show the world that, "Hey, we know polynomials!"
Each group of students can be given a set of pennants, scissors and either glue, tape or a stapler. Students can be in charge of cutting out the pennants. Groups can compete to see which group can complete the most pennants or your entire class can add pennants to one string as they complete each one. You may also choose to have your students color their pennants to add to your classroom decor.
