This activity was designed as low prep way to practice fine motor skills. It comes with color and black & white versions that can be used in a variety of ways. Included themes: gum ball machine, apple/orange tree, balloons, rain, watermelon, treasure chest, pizza, fruit stand, candy bag, on the road, ice cream, tablet, Christmas lights, Christmas Tree, chocolate box, hot cocoa, and spider web.
Use with pom poms and tweezers: The students will pick up a pom pom with tweezers and release it on the mat to complete the picture (working on sustaining the grip/increasing strength).
Use with pom poms and clothespins: The students will use the clothespin to pick up the pom poms and then release them on the mat to complete the picture (this requires more strength to open the clothes pin).
Use with fingers and pom poms. The student will pick up the pom pom with pincer grip and place them on the mat to complete the picture (works on pincer grip).
Use with ink/paint and fingerprints. The students will dip their finger in ink or paint and then make a fingerprint on the page to complete the picture (works on finger isolation).
Use as a math activity. The students can use this as a counting activity (put 10 gum balls in the gum ball machine, put 5 apples in the tree, make 6 raindrops etc…)
I also use this activity as an open-ended speech therapy activity. The student will complete a speech or language task as they put each pom pom or fingerprint on the mat.
Other variations: Use small erasers or other small objects on the mats to work on fine motor skills.
Assembly: I laminate the color versions or put them in page protectors. The black & white versions are print and go!
