Students read an account of the destruction of Pompeii by Vesuvius, answer 9 questions, and complete 3 creative activities. One includes 6 types of people from Pompeii (types of people specified on the handout), the second involves 5 questions based on this writing prompt: "What if your town was frozen in place and time due to a natural disaster and re-discovered 300 years from now," and the third involves creating a museum exhibit. The answers are included and this would be great for a sub!
Sample questions include:
--From whom do we get this account and how trustworthy can it be?
--Explain the phrase “scholarly acumen” in your own words.
--What did Pliny tell people the broad sheets of fire were?
--Based on what you read, how did Pliny the Elder die?
--Specifically regarding the “inventing fictitious danger,” do we see anything like that in modern times? If so give an example.
