This lesson explores a favorite children's song: Pop! Goes the Weasel. In this lesson, students will first learn the song, then add body percussion for the steady beat, transfer the steady beat to barred instruments and unpitched percussion. The lesson also includes an opportunity for students to play the glockenspiel and the slap stick (or whip). My first and second grade students have loved this arrangement, and they are looking forward to trying out the extensions included in the lesson as well. These extensions include ideas for a B section and a game. Additionally, I have included the sheet music for the Orff arrangement. When using this lesson, I also modify it for my kindergarten students to explore the chord bordun. I am sure your primary students will not only enjoy this lesson, but they will also demonstrate many music standards (that provide you an easy assessment opportunity!).
