Description

Looking for pop music for your music classroom that is both appropriate and inspiring? Wanting a way to bridge the gap between folk songs and more contemporary music? This is a collaborative set, co-created with my friend Lessia at I am Bullyproof Music, and is the second in a series. The pack includes:

Mp3’s for the song “Gift in this Present”: includes the song with vocals, and with only background vocals. Using these mp3’s, you can have students listen and reflect, sing along, and perform!
Sheet music for the song “Gift in this Present”: This is helpful if you want to play along on piano, or if you want to look at the song for teaching specific concepts
A list of musical concepts you can teach through the song: Includes notes about teaching quarter rest, 3/4 meter, ti-tam (or eighth/ dotted quarter), and modulation
Gift in this Present song reflection worksheet: Can be used the first or second time students listen to the song, to have students reflect on the song, discuss personal connections to the song, list what they wonder about the song, etc. Great for critical thinking!
Gift in this Present Lyrics Powerpoint: Project for students to read or sing the lyrics as they listen to the song! We included two versions: one with only the lyrics, and one with embedded music.
Gift in this Present lyric reflection worksheet: Asks students specific questions about the lyrics
Gift in this Present lyric slips activity: Great to use with students as a way to teach the song! Students are split up into small groups, then get slips to organize the lyrics in order!
Directions for the set: Includes suggestions for when and how to use each activity

I have used this song with my own third graders, and was floored by how much they loved it! The song is about taking the time to enjoy the present, and enjoy each other's company, which is a message that really resounds with students. We hope your students enjoy it as much as ours have!

Download the preview to hear a bit of the song! Read this blog post about how I used this song with a third grade program.

Please note that there are three measures in the song with A below middle C. Check out this set if you'd like the music in higher keys.
