Looking for a fun and engaging way to practice writing personal narratives with your students? This writing craftivity will have your kiddos poppin’ with excitement!
Students will go through the writing process after sharing in an experience of popping popcorn with you in class. I bought an inexpensive popcorn maker and let my students put the kernels in and share in the experience of watching them get hot and pop out. Many of my students didn’t realize that is how the popcorn starts and were in complete amazement as it popped out. I then let them put on butter, flavoring and they ate their popcorn. Students then filled out the included popcorn worksheet and filled in an adjective about their popcorn and their favorite part.
In the following days in class we discussed our experiences and then began the writing process completing a rough draft and then final copy, which are included in this writing pack.
Since we had just started learning and writing about personal narratives I wanted to give my students a shared experience we could all begin writing about. I have included three different pages so you can choose the sheet that will best fit the needs of you and your students as they go to write. After students complete the writing process, their writing becomes a popcorn bucket with popcorn spilling over the sides perfect to display on a bulletin board.
Included in this writing pack:
-rough draft with transitional words- first, next, then and last and a topic sentence fill in the blank: The day I popped popcorn in class was ___________ !
-rough draft with transitional words- first, next, then and last
-popcorn pieces template to print on cardstock (I then cut them out, gave one to each student and let them trace and cut and their own popcorn and make their craft)
-popcorn worksheet for students to fill out after popping the popcorn
I gave students a red piece of construction paper to glue on their popcorn bucket writing and a piece of yellow to trace and cut out their popcorn pieces. The craft was easy and fun for students to make and they loved seeing their work displayed!
