Here is a fun and engaging way to introduce controls and variables to your budding scientists. The hands on element of watching the kernel pop in a test tube has everyone enthralled and engaged for the duration of the lab. Be prepared for shrieks and giggles of surprise as the kernels pop!
The lab is written in two different levels to accommodate a wide range of classroom settings and ability levels. This also makes for a great teacher demo at younger grades if you are concerned with everyone having their own candle.
I used this activity with my High School Special Ed class and my students were so very proud of their lab and accomplishments. They took the observations very seriously and utilized their best scientific vocabulary. I hope your students will feel similarly.
