Poppy is a wonderful book by the well-known author, Avi. This literature unit for Poppy contains all you need to enjoy this book with your students. The unit is designed to be used with a small group or your whole class
The Poppy Literature Unit with Close Reading includes:
-Meeting and Discussion guide set up to cover the book in 5 meetings which can cover 3 to 5 weeks, depending on meeting frequency. The first meeting is to get acquainted with the book and look over the assignment to discuss the first set of chapters.
Meetings 2, 3, 4, and 5 include a discussion guide, students sharing Thinking Notes and questions from their Question Tree. Students discuss 3 vocabulary words from their Know No activity.
There are also 4 (2 page) Comprehension Checks, one for each set of chapters. The Comprehension Check has a Word Splash where the students write a sentence for each chapter about the important events using words from the book. Then there are 7 questions to answer.

The teacher will need to copy that page for the students to use during the close reading activity. A set of discussions questions for the 3 re-readings is included. The questions for each reading takes the students deeper into understanding the text.
