Popsicle Place Value Activities

Popsicle Match – Math Stations or Guided Math Group
Give the children 5 double ten frame cards and the matching numeral cards, equation cards and popsicle 10 rod cards. They will match the cards and record the ten frame, numeral, and equation on the recording sheet. They will then swap cards with another child and repeat.
Pocket Chart Activities – Whole Group or Small Group
Equation Match
Place the equation cards in the pocket chart. Have the children match the numeral card to show the answer.
Double Ten Frame/Number Match
Place the double ten frames in the pocket chart. Children will match the number card to the double ten frame to show how many.
Double Ten Frame/Equation Match
Place the double ten frames in a pocket chart. Children will match the equation, and number card to the double ten frame.
Don’t Melt the Popsicle! (3 ways to play)
1. Place the double ten frames in the pocket chart. Hide the sun behind one of the cards. The children will guess where the sun is by either giving the amount the double ten frame shows or by giving the equation the double ten frame shows, The card guessed will be pulled up to reveal if the sun is behind it. Continue until the sun is found.
2. Place the equation cards in a pocket chart. Hide the sun behind one of the cards. The children will guess where the sun is by giving the answer to the equation. The card guessed will be pulled up to reveal if the sun is behind it. Continue until the sun is found.
3. Place the number cards in a pocket chart. The children will guess where the sun is by naming the number. The card guessed will be pulled up to reveal if the sun is behind it. Continue until the sun is found.
Recording Sheet – Independent Work
The children will pull a number card and record it on the line before the double ten frame. They will ten fill in the double ten frame to show the number. They will write the equation to show the double ten frame on the lines below the frame.
