In this assignment, students use critical thinking skills to create predicted population density maps of North and South America using physical maps and their own prior knowledge. After explaining what a population density map is, students analyze physical maps to make their best guess population density prediction. On the worksheet, they need to explain their thinking. When the students finish their prediction maps and answer all the questions, they show the teacher their work. If everything is done with best effort, they receive the actual population density maps for them to compare with their predictions and answer the final questions.
This assignment is great for middle school geography and fits right in with the 5 themes of geography. My students love the challenge of trying to make the best prediction!
This packet includes a sample population density map, blank maps of North and South America, the actual population density maps of each continent, and the worksheet.
