This is a hands-on, real-world project for any student in high school that can be done in any subject area. Students will thank you at the end of this Portfolio Project when they have a head start on how to write an effective cover letter, resume, answer common interview questions, collect recommendation letters from their teachers, write a college essay, and start collecting 5 of their best samples of work. Students also have to search for scholarship opportunities and we then build a class list of available scholarships that we share with other students.
I love to do this project with my yearbook class at the end of the year once the book is done. They work on one component per day and those graduating seniors have a nice portfolio to take with them. Students in grades 9, 10, and 11 can tweak and add to their portfolio in upcoming years.
