Every school year we begin again the process of getting to know our students in order to provide the best learning opportunities for them. The pressure of creating Individual Education Plans bears down on us and there is no time to waste. Parents want an opportunity to tell you about their child with Autism and you need to seek information from previous teachers, professionals because each has a unique perspective of the student. How can we save time, energy and sanity for everyone involved?
Why not start with a shared template of a working document? Taking the time to record what we already know (or think we know) about a student with Autism can make meetings and educational planning far more efficient and authentic. Keeping it updated maintains its usefulness and relevance. Asking for parental input sets the tone for a mutual relationship of respect and collaboration.
This document offers a place to start.
