What is PASS?
Positive Approach to Student Success (PASS) is a highly-structured, tiered, positive behavior support program that provides SEL services within the mainstream setting to students who have severe behavioral concerns. PASS is a research-based program that relies on data to drive decisions which has delivered countless success stories across the nation.
What is Social-Emotional Learning?
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the exercise of learning about self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and decision-making skills. These skills enable our students to think about making responsible decisions, to recognize, understand, and manage their emotions, to build and maintain positive relationships, to set and attain constructive life goals, and to perceive and display empathy towards others. SEL also supports a positive learning environment that is both safe and nurturing. Social and emotional learning builds the foundation for students to be able to interact positively and appropriately with one’s surroundings in lots of different settings.
Why is teaching SEL important?
SEL is not a new term, teaching it just hasn’t been a priority in public education or our culture until recently. The rise of the importance of SEL is forthcoming because we are starting to see the repercussions of not teaching it across all walks of life. In previous generations, the lack of SEL was evident, but discrepancies are growing with each passing generation. in an ever-growing nation, full of people with emotions, wants, and needs, the lack of SEL skills is a recipe for disaster and we see this on a spectrum. Increasing rates in our communities of isolation, stress, anxiety, school shootings, suicides, infidelity, divorces, and so on, are all results, in part, of little to no SEL taking place in our schools or at home. Now that this part of the issue has been identified, there is an easy, practical solution; make time for SEL in classrooms. What a great place to start. There is loads of research available in favor of social and emotional learning.
