I was trying to come up with a way to communicate with parents about behaviors that we may be trying to change in our classroom...without having to sound too negative. I teach 3-year-old preschool so I don't like to change children's colors, move them down, etc. Instead, I came up with this chart that goes home with them daily.
Every day, each child gets either GREAT or GOOD circled for their behavior that day. If they get GOOD circled, I then add my own note about something they are going to work on. This way, the parents are aware of the behaviors and can talk with their child at home, but the parents are constantly receiving negative news. In addition, children are not being embarrassed in front of the whole class for "getting a color changed"...but instead are being told in a positive way that they didn't have a GREAT day, but they had a GOOD day and they have some different choices to make. I try to keep my preschool classroom a very positive place!
I am beginning this behavior chart in my classroom this year as I have a very large class and want to communicate with parents daily about behaviors. My students keep this in their folders that go between home and school.
