This basic behavior chart can be used to assist children who struggle with various behaviors in class, which hinders their learning. By recognizing specific positive behaviors and providing immediate rewards, children will learn that they can obtain attention from adults for positive choices and also earn fun prizes that continue to motivate them.
You can make edits to this chart so that it works best for the child you work with. I provided examples of specific behaviors/expectations that the child must exhibit in order to earn their smiley faces for any given period. I developed a very clear list of these expectations and provided a print-out to serve as a reminder for the child. The page of smiley faces can be cut out and made into stickers or you can use laminate everything and use velcro, which makes it easier to re-use the same chart and smileys week after week.
As with all behavior charts, it is imperative that the adult (teacher, teacher's aid, para, social worker) be consistent and follow the rules of the behavior chart exactly as it was described to the child. I find it helps to have the child place the smiley that they earn on the chart themselves to help develop sense of personal responsibility when they don't meet expectations and a sense of pride and personal accomplishment when they do well.
