I've developed a way to encourage students to participate in using the target language and help me and their peers with administrative tasks to make class run more smoothly. I created 5 different class jobs and each week I assigned a different job to a different student alphabetically. For that whole week, the assigned student performed that task. At the end of the week (or at the end of the day; whichever you prefer!) I paid the student one coin (a photocopied image of a coin - included in this document). I also awarded a coin to students who volunteered to participate, took a risk by expressing themselves in Spanish rather than English, or for helping a peer. Students saved their coins in Ziploc bags and every interim period I opened up a class store where I had bins of different small prizes such as pencils with Spanish phrases on them, Hispanic candy, stickers, and other items I purchased at the Hispanic grocery store, during my trips abroad or online. Students exchanged their coins for a prize based on the price I set for each item. This system really helped students to be more engaged in participating and using the target language and in assisting me with classroom tasks. Feel free to use this document as is or modify it to meet your class needs!
