Positive Rules of Exponents Practice worksheet
This is a double sided worksheet (with answer key) that I use in my classroom when introducing rules of exponents. The worksheet is separated into 5 brief sections-
Part 1- Students define the words: base, power, product and coefficient.
Part 2- They must look at the given formulas for the rules of: Product of Powers, Quotient of Powers and Power of a Power and label them, as well as explain the rules in their own words.
Part 3- Use the product of powers rule to multiply two or three monomials (8 questions).
Part 4- Use the power of a power rule to simplify monomials being raised to an exponent (8 questions).
Part 5- Use the quotient of powers rule to simplify the division of two monomials (8 questions).
I have decided over my years of teaching that incorporating the rules of negative exponents and zero at the same time as the positive exponents only confuses my students. I like to focus just on the positive exponents on the first day and then move onto negative exponents and the power of zero the next day.
