Integer and number line concepts become clearer when students set them in context. I love the minions of Despicable Me, and thought drawing them in settings such as going shopping, to the bank, sky-diving, or swimming with the dolphins, would be way more engaging than doing umpteen real world word problems.
In this activity, students write an integer story about their minion scene and then show the movement from a zero point in positive and negative directions. Included is an concept explanation page, checklist of possible minion world scenarios, a student instruction page with space for their story, and a fill in your standards rubric.
They loved the activity and the number lines required on their posters, along with their story, verified what they understood about integer concepts and vocabulary.
