Learning Objective

Students will differentiate between words that need an apostrophe before the -s to show ownership, and words that end in -s that do not show ownership. Students will form and use singular possessive nouns.

This 31-slide PowerPoint is a step-by-step presentation that teaches students when and how to use apostrophes in singular possessive nouns. It begins with a comprehensive review of what a possessive noun is. Then, there are several slides which focus on using an apostrophe-s to show possession. Students have an opportunity to differentiate between sentences that are showing possession (therefore requiring an apostrophe), and sentences that are NOT showing possession (therefore needing NO apostrophe).

It concludes with 13 multiple-choice practice slides.

***A PowerPoint companion handout is also included in this file. Students can follow along and record answers on this handout as you progress through the PowerPoint! The companion handout is available in both printable format or digital format.**
