This packet on the Post-Cold War era (1989-2001) has three primary source reading packets, a vocabulary list and a worksheet. Each reading includes 8-10 document-based-questions or require students to do web research on the topic. It includes:
1. NAFTA debate: H. Ross Perot's "Giant sucking sound," President Bush, Vice President Gore, Congressman Dick Gephardt, Congressman David Dreier, Congresswoman Helen Bentley
2. 1995-96 Budget Shutdown debate: An explanation of the evolution of congressional budgeting and debate excerpts from Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and Charlie Norwood (R-GA). The readings and questions refer forward to the budget shutdown debate of 2013.
3. President Clinton impeachment: Kenneth Starr testimony, response of President Clinton's lawyers, text of impeachment resolutions, trial excerpts of remarks by Senators Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Asa Hutchinson (R-AR). The issue is delicately handled with regard to the mechanics of the sexual harassment allegations against President Clinton.
The readings (and the review worksheet at the end) make for great homework assignments and class discussion of the topics at hand.
Note: These readings along with more than 70 others are included in my book “Primary Source American History,” along with two mock trials, a mock congress and several dozen projects review worksheets. If you like this (or the free readings on my store), consider getting the complete set.
