When students are reading independently, it is very difficult for us to know what is going on in their minds without asking them directly. In order to determine what my students thoughts are during reading, I provide them with a stack of post-its, however they do not know how to use them until we practice. The following pages are templates that you can use when you begin to teach this strategy. I have provided two different templates; one that is blank and one that I provide for my students to place into their reading notebooks and refer to when using their post-its for the first few times of reading. Both of these templates have squares that are a little bit bigger than 3 inches, therefore I would recommend using 3X3 post-it notes. After we go over when and how to use the post-its we practice using a text that they have already read. After practicing and modeling, a slow release is given to the students to practice on their own. I hope that you enjoy this freebie. Any feedback is welcome! Thank you for your download!
