Do your students know the history and customs of the Federal and other popular holidays celebrated in America? The posters in this resource explain the origins and traditions of 17 secular American holidays. Written in acrostic poem format, they are easy to assemble and are a great way to teach English Language Learners and other students about American culture. Writing, grammar, and discussion tasks are also included in this 100-plus page resource.

More Info:

Each American holiday poster includes the pages for the poster, an answer key for the grammar task, and a blank template for writing an acrostic poem about the holiday.

Assembling the posters just requires a few minutes of cutting and taping, gluing or stapling the pages together. If you laminate the finished posters, they can be used year after year.

Two writing tasks are included:

* Students invent a holiday and write an acrostic poem about it

* Students select and then describe how they celebrate one of the holidays

A grammar task to rewrite the text on the posters by including the definite article the is also included. An explanation of this grammar point is included so even if you’re not an English Language Arts teacher, you can still have your students do this task.

The 5 discussion topics can be used with both native English speakers and English Language Learners, including ELLs at a beginning level of proficiency.

A page listing the ELA Common Core standards this resource helps address is included for your convenience if you are working in a Common Core state.
