Instead of doing a traditional test after my Postmodernism unit, I like to have students identify characteristics of Postmodernism in American culture as we did when watching Shrek, analyzing "Born this Way" by Lady Gaga, or studying "On the Rainy River" by Tim O'Brien.
My students particularly seemed to enjoy this task, because it allowed them to both use creativity and personalize their final product; my students really connected with this assignment because they were able to use a facet of American culture that interests them as long as it fulfilled the assignment requirements.
This task forced students to identify two postmodern trends in their television show, song, movie, book, poem, etc of choice. Students had to explain each trend in one mature paragraph. Furthermore, students had to include a visual of their trend as well. The visual could be self-made or found online (cited, of course).
On the due date for this project, I have students present their products before submitting. Examples that students found were...The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Bones, "Roar" by Lady Gaga, Blindside, The Help, etc.
