A pourquoi story explains how something came to be (i.e., How the Tiger Got Its Stripes). This graphic organizer and writing template allows students to create their own pourquoi story with structured graphic organizers that prompt them to include the relevant information for each section. Each graphic organizer provides guiding questions, a space for brainstorming, sentence writing, and an illustration. The six graphic organizers include:
- Title/Page 1: Setting
- Page 2: Character
- Page 3: The Problem
- Page 4: The Change
- Page 5: After the Change
- Page 6: Conclusion.
The writing template following the graphic organizers can be used for a final draft with illustrations. I have also included a complete story example for reference or modeling, as well as a brainstorm list of possible topic ideas.
I have used this organizer in my own class for several years to help students structure their writing and work on the elements of setting, character, problem, solution, and to understand the elements of traditional literature. My students loved this project, and I hope yours will too!
