This multi-part lesson explores the relationship between poverty and toxic stress in children. Students examine the differences between minimum wage and living wage and the ramifications of living at or near the poverty level, especially for children.
In order to complete this multi-part lesson, students need internet access. Links to multiple resources needed to complete this assignment are included in this four-page packet. For example, a link to The Living Wage Calculator, developed by Professor Amy Glasmeier of MIT is included in this assignment.
This assignment is appropriate for most high school-level Social Studies classes.
I use this assignment with my alternative education students enrolled in my Life Skills and Social Studies courses.
