PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

SWAT is a fun, engaging, and competitive review game designed for the following learning targets:

-Multiplying exponents with the same base
-Dividing exponents with the same base
-Adding like terms
-Power to a power
-Evaluate expressions using exponents
-Distributing power to multiple terms inside grouping

Materials needed: 2 fly swatters (or something like it)

RULES:

-The objective of the game is to get the most points. Points are awarded to the first team to swat the right answer.

-Two teams. Teacher will keep score

-Game starts with a player from each team at the board with one of the fly swatters.

-Teacher will show question for a certain amount of time (depending on the difficulty of the question.)

-Teacher will then show answer options.

-Player must “swat” the correct answer on the board. If the answer if not listed, player should swat the triangle (meaning none of the above.)

-Once a player swats the board, he/she cannot change answers. They must keep the flyswatter at the location in which they swatted.

-A player can consult with their team, but they have to run back to their team while deferring.

-Players who abuse the power of the flyswatter are automatically disqualified from the entire game.

_______

I put desks together to make two separate teams. Then I give each team mini-whiteboards and markers, so they can write down the question and work through it for practice and just in case their teammate at the board needs to consult on the answer. This way every one is involved.

I also play that after I reveal the answer, players have seven seconds to nicely hand off the swatter to the next teammate. I show the next question after seven seconds, so students have to hustle to get to the front. This makes it more exciting and competitive. Plus, teams have to communicate with each other in order to make it work.
