This is a group activity intended for the first day of learning about powers/exponents. Students learn the following rules inductively: Basics of Powers, the Power Rule, the Product Rule, the Quotient Rule, and the Power to a Power.
The students don't learn the name of the rules, but rather look at examples and develop their own rule. They then have to provide their own example and practice with the rule.
I grouped my kids so at least one strong student was in each group. This worked like a charm in both 7th (first time they see it) and 9th grade (as a review).
After this lesson, I went through each of the rules for 1 lesson.
