This is a lesson to introduce the concept of explanatory writing. It begins by showing students different pieces of text: one that states facts, one that explains how to put something together, and one that gives steps on how to complete a project. It then gives examples of types of text you would normally see explanatory writing: textbooks, user manuals, cookbooks, and magazines.
In the skill portion of the lesson, students are shown more sample pieces of texts, and they explain to their partner how they know this is explanatory text (does it inform, explain, or give steps?).
