This is a lab for statistics. Topics covered include histograms, specifically histograms with uniform distribution. Students will also explore theoretical and empirical probability as well as expected values.
I created this lab to be used with Statcrunch but it can be adapted for Excel or any other software that students can use to manipulate large files. You can go to this link (http://www.nc-educationlottery.org/powerball.aspx) and then click "Download Results" to get a csv file of all the draws from 2006 to the present.
An interesting part of this data set is that the numbers aren't exactly uniform and this is because of the rules of what balls are drawn changing during the ten years. Specifically in 2015 the numbers of white balls being chosen was extended to 69 and the number of red balls was shortened to 26. This change accounts for a surprising distribution that I hope students can either research or conclude on their own.
