These slides can be used as an introduction to a unit on journalism and/or elements of news. Students will review the criteria of what makes a story newsworthy (timeliness, proximity, prominence, oddity, consequence, conflict, human interest). They should take notes and participate in discussion throughout the slides. The last slide contains a link to usatoday.com, which you can use to view current news stories and discuss what makes the stories newsworthy (what criteria of news elements they meet). You might want to visit a local news site as well. *If you're interested, a great follow-up assignment would be "Newsworthy Exercise" - you can find it in my store.
