My powerpoint presentation is aimed at helping teachers identify struggling reader and become familiar with techniques to help them succeed. Struggling Readers have been considered a major issue in classrooms for a number of years. When speaking with reading coaches their number one concern is struggling readers. Teachers need to be able to identify these students and become familiar with strategies in order to help them be successful in reading.
Learning to read is a challenge for almost 40% of kids. With early help, most reading problems can be prevented. Teachers will be a big part. Teachers can help struggling readers by getting to know their students, encouraging good literacy habits at home, reflecting on their own research-based teaching, tapping into the specialists and resources at their school, and staying informed on current strategies.
Struggling readers are definitely a challenge. It is important for teacher to recognize that their students learn at different rates. Using weekly or monthly anecdotal records, running records, supervised practice, etc is important in monitoring student progress and needs. The most important thing to do for our students is to ensure that they experience some form of success in reading. Then they will fourish!
