This resource is a fully editable powerpoint of all the presentations I used for a 7-day Pointillism Landscape Painting (Watercolor) unit in my Intro to Visual Arts class at a high school in the Bronx, New York City. The powerpoint is 74 slides of lessons and at the end I’ve included an additional 58 slides of landscape reference photos for students to choose from.
The powerpoints include links to videos about the artists introduced as well as photos of past student pointillism paintings as samples. Included is my painting set up and clean up routine, as well as a mini lesson on the importance of art class grades in GPA (can be removed if not applicable). For this unit my students painted on a half sheet of watercolor paper (6inches by 9inches) so this unit could definitely be extended for a longer amount of time if you use a full sheet of 9x12 paper (which I have done in the past but requires students with more patience). I work in a district that doesn’t have Visual Arts classes in the middle schools, so this project could easily be adapted for a middle school level, or even adapted up for higher skilled high school students. This is a great project for students who have never painted before or don’t feel comfortable with watercolor paint yet. In this unit students learn the following artists and art vocabulary:
-Vincent Van Gogh
-Robert Duncanson + Antebellum Era
-Horizon, background, middleground, foreground
-Commission & Patron
-Comparing and Contrasting artists’ styles
