Description of Lesson:
I use Interactive Student Notebooks (ISN) and SmartBoards to teach new mathematical concepts. In this Powers and Exponents Lesson, my SmartBoard lesson is aligned with my graphic organizer and examples. I find that engaging SmartBoard lessons and Interactive Student Notebooks create a fun and hands-on learning environment for learners of all levels. Everything for this lesson is completely ready for implementation. Just make copies of the graphic organizer for each student, and your lesson is ready to go!
This lesson provides the basic foundation of powers and exponents. Students will become familiar with the mathematical vocabulary including powers, base, exponent, factors, squared, and cubed. Definitions and examples are provided for each term. The lesson also includes practice word problems, a challenge of the day, and a multiple choice practice question to check student understanding.

1 Interactive SmartBoard Lesson to accompany the graphic organizer
Step-by-Step guide of SmartBoard lesson
1) Print one copy per student of the graphic organizer.
2) Have fun!
How to Use the Graphic Organizer:
My students each have an ISN for keeping important mathematical content. With this specific graphic organizer, students will fill in the notes while working through the SmartBoard activity as a class. I have left space under each key term for a definition or further examples. Some of my visual learners lightly shade each box different colors. When we are finished, students fold the graphic organizer in half (hamburger style) and glue the back right side into their ISN for future reference.
How to Use the Interactive SmartBoard Lesson:
All my SmartBoard lessons are designed to get students out of their seats and engaged in the learning process. Many pages have links, or images that fade out, or fade in. All answers are included on each slide. A step-by-step guide is included that details all of the links and interactive features.
