High Quality Mathematical Task. Students will Use and Explain Powers of 10 to Multiply and Divide with Decimals. Students are given directions and a guideline to create and solve eighteen of their own problems of dividing and multiplying decimals by the powers of ten. Students have to answer questions in writing about which direction does the decimal point move during division and multiplication by 10, 100, and 1000. Students have to analyze in writing, using their own examples, whether the numbers become bigger or smaller, if there is a connection between powers of ten (number of zeros in 10, 100, 1000) and how many spaces the decimal moves during division and multiplication. There are two versions of the task included: one for regular and advanced mastery of the standards (two pages long: one for division, one for multiplication with in depth questions to answer in writing), another one - one page for division and multiplication combined with fewer questions to answer in writing.
