Scientific Notation and Powers of Ten Project: The Noodle Jar
This activity uses estimation, multiplication, powers of ten
and scientific notation to find out how many noodles it will take to fill a jar. The activity looks at six different sizes of noodles. The students estimate and then calculate the exact answer. Finally, they convert the answers into scientific notation.
In our classroom, we have “the noodle jar.” We use it as a way to review the vocabulary words that we have studied throughout the year. When any student finds a word in print out in the world, they can bring the source into class and put a noodle in the noodle jar. When we fill the jar as a class we earn a class reward.
This is a fun and mathematical way to figure out just how many words they would have to find to earn reward using different types of noodles.
