PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This powerpoint is actually an extended lesson examining bias and propaganda by using the time period after the Spanish American War in which the US took over the Philippines after a three year war.

The purpose of the lesson is to hone the skills of recognizing bias and propaganda but to do it through an engaging and controversial event in US History.

The powerpoint is 20 slides long and parts of it could be printed out for students to use in class, in groups etc. I included instructions/questions/answers in the notes under most of the slides. So if you are not feeling as confident about your analytical skills, I have those supports for you.

This lesson also supports the Common Core Standards for identifying author's purpose as well as determining the main idea of text. It also includes analyzing visual images including a political cartoon and an advertisement.

Feel free to ask me for any clarification. And also feel free to adapt it for your own classroom needs.

In the preview you can see about half of the slides of the lesson. At the end of the presentation I included some differentiated project ideas.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
