Tired of your students’ excessive use of words like ‘stuff’, ‘things’ and ‘said’? Do you cringe when you hear the kids call each other names? After four years of teaching Language Arts, I certainly was, so I created a “Dead Word Wall.”
The students all get to nominate six words they feel should be ‘killed’ in the classroom...never to be spoken or written again. You then compile a master list and vote on the top ten words as a class. My kids picked words like "fat" "gay" and "ugly" to promote kindness in our classroom, but also chose "stuff" and "things" etc. Try it! They will love the process and their writing and speaking will improve because of it!
