Description
★Do your ESL students struggle to find synonyms for their writing activities? This is a visually stimulating PDF that takes students through a step-by-step process to find words to substitute keywords in a sentence. The text is A2 (CEFR), which means it is quite accessible to beginner/intermediate-level teens and adults. It may be too easy for B2-C1 (upper-intermediate/advanced), but the other resource that I have, Practice with Paraphrasing, would be better for more advanced students.
▶️In the slide presentation, you can introduce your students to the idea of paraphrasing and why it is important. Also, use the check-list with them to help them build their paraphrasing skills.
♨️ The slide presentation also explains how to use the thesaurus to check for parts of speech and how to use a tool like Linguee to determine if the word is a good fit. I mention MLA formatting on one of the slides if your students need to work on in-text citations.
✅Then, students can practice paraphrasing sentences in small groups. I've also included the Google Jamboard link and instructions to use sticky notes and the highlighting tools to move the sentence parts around. Answers will vary, but I do provide an answer key for you to give you some possible ideas.
I provide an editable paraphrasing rubric in Google slides and a PDF as well to distribute to students.
