PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

With these 56 task cards, students can practice the correct ways for writing citations in MLA format for seven different types of resources: Books with one author, books with two authors, websites, movies, magazine articles, TV episodes and plays. Task cards for the books are divided into fiction and non-fiction categories, movies are divided into DVD and film resources, and magazines are broken out into print and electronic articles. The information for the citations is from actual print, electronic, and performance media and the works that were selected represent a wide variety of topics and a diverse group of authors to appeal to all middle school students. If students know how to write citations for these resources correctly, it will be easier for them to write bibliographies for their school assignments.

(Please note that this resource is based on the 7th edition of the MLA handbook. The 8th edition, which was published after this resource was created, has some minor changes, such as not needing to include the place of publication. An update will be available as soon as I have time to work on it and you will be able to download it for free if you have already purchased this product.)

Each of the 56 task cards includes all the information needed to write a citation in MLA format correctly. The details are listed out of order on the task cards so students can learn the proper sequence for writing citations. A mini-poster that shows the required information for all the types of resources in this product is included. It can be used to present the information to students prior to using the task cards, as a guide to aid students when they are using the task cards, and/or as a reference in their writing journals or writing centers.

Another page in this product explains what the abbreviations and symbols on the task cards mean and also includes a glossary of terms that may not be familiar to all students, which will be especially helpful to English Language Learners. Students can work individually, in small groups, or as a whole class with these task cards.

Teachers can have students use all the task cards or choose only some of the categories for their students to work on. Every task card is color-coded and displays a symbol to indicate what type of resource it is to make it easy for teachers and students to identify the task cards. The answer key lists each type of resource on a separate page so both teachers and students can use them to correct the work. In addition, both color and black-and-white versions of the task cards, mini-poster, and answer key are included in this product for maximum flexibility. A list of the ELA Common Core standards this product addresses is also provided.

With these task cards, teaching students how to correctly write citations can be fun!
