Irish iconic poet William Butler Yeats and current English Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy offer college level students, AP Literature students, gifted/honors students, and British Literature students a rich and extensive opportunity to compare and contrast these poets’ styles, subject matters, tones, forms and literary devices. Using the standout selections, "No Second Troy" and "Anne Hathaway," students will review important poetic devices, close read and annotate the two poems, view supporting video clips, evaluate the writing prompt, formulate the thesis for a paired-passage essay and examine scored student sample essays with commentary. A link to an appropriate rubric is included to assist with scoring the essays generated from the activity. This lesson prepares students for AP Literature exams, Common Core extended response assessments, the SAT essay and critical thinking activities.
The packet includes a complete lesson, common core standards, essential and key questions, links to video clips and resources, a teachers guide for annotating the poems and scored student samples with commentary.
