We presented this lesson for a series of workshops for AP teachers across the state last summer. Our sessions were attended by hundreds of experienced teachers, newbies, curriculum leaders and even administrators who wanted more dynamic and engaging activities in their AP toolkit.

Do you want more on the Moor?

This lesson is designed for students to close read a Shakespearean text, analyze the play for its literary devices and persuasive appeals, and write with greater depth about the author’s use of rhetorical strategies, diction and tone.

After viewing and comparing several versions of Othello, students will analyze a passage from William Shakespeare’s tragedy and discuss the method he uses to reveal the character’s intentions as well as study the play and apply critical literary theory lenses to their analysis. A Socratic Seminar completes the study.
