Product Description
A star studded cast performed Othello at the Donmar Warehouse in 2007. Chiwetel Ejiofor, as Othello, Ewan McGregor as Iago, and Tom Hiddleston as Cassio. A link to the audio performance is provided. Students will be studying a persuasive review of the play from The New Yorker Magazine. Links are provided to a couple scenes from the play. Students will review important thematic questions, close read and annotate the text, view supporting video clips, listen to a Radio Lab podcast story on Iago and evil, and view a TED TALK on an ode to envy. The students will be assessed on the writing prompt for the 2015 AP Literature essay Question #3 on cruelty.

In fact, this year the College Board has published nine Othello essays on the thematic question on cruelty that represents all ranges of scores. There is a training activity in this resource that will teach the students to recognize the quality of essays that they read.

There is also an opportunity to write a Rhetorical Précis, as well as supporting material for teaching this strategy to your students.

These four lessons prepare students for AP English Language and Literature exams, Common Core extended response assessments, American and World Literature Course exams, the SAT and ACT essay, and critical thinking activities.

In this resource there is a unique detailed rubric that can be used to score Socratic Seminars in a way that encourages organic fluid discussions. In the guide there is a step-by-step explanation on how to conduct a fish-bowl discussion with the rubric. Students will be asked to answer thematic questions present in text to help them write the essay. The packet includes complete lessons, Common Core standards, and essential and key questions.
