Product Description
Students will be taught to view Luis J. Rodriguez’s poem, “Speaking With Hands,” with a lens of cultural criticism. In the autobiographical poem, Rodriguez’s mother argues for justice at the food store in front of her young son in an impoverished neighborhood in Los Angeles.

There are many links to video, audio, and print resources for studying cultural criticism, art, and social activism. There is a link to the TED Talk by Luis J. Rodriguez on transformation. Also, included in the lessons are a look at Chicano Art in the Post-Election of Trump, the art of Favianna Rodriguez, and activist’s efforts to bring healthy foods to Boyle Heights, California.

The lesson features an original prompt analyzing the poem. Students will craft a persuasive thesis sentence. Instructions and strategies are included on how to teach a SIFT analysis and hold an inner and outer Socratic Circle.

These lessons fit any Honors Literature class, Pre-AP, American Literature, American Literature or AP English Language or Literature class to prepare students for AP English Language exams, Common Core extended response assessments, American Literature Course exams, the SAT and ACT essay and critical thinking activities. I have added an addendum that describes how to adapt the lessons for ELL students.

The packet includes complete lessons, Common Core standards, essential and key questions. Now adaptable for ESOL classes.
