Product Description
Using Michael S. Harper’s poem, “Dear John, Dear Coltrane,” students will review important poetic devices, close read and annotate poems, and view supporting video clips. This lesson prepares students for AP Literature and Language exams, Common Core extended response assessments, the SAT essay and critical thinking activities. An NPR interview with Michael S. Harper speaking about Coltrane and the poem, a Ted Talk on the physics of Jazz are featured. An interview with Coltrane and a feature on the song, “A Love Supreme” is also used.

In this resource there is a unique detailed rubric that can be used to score Socratic Seminars in a way that encourages organic fluid discussions. In the guide there is a step by step explanation on how to conduct a fish-bowl discussion with the rubric. The Socratic seminar acts as a poetry explication. The packet includes a complete lesson, common core standards, essential and key questions, links to video clips and resources. All lessons have an opening, work session, and closing structure. A link to the 2004B AP Literature exam is used as the prompt for this unit is modeled on that prompt.
