Zadie Smith reads aloud and comments on her New Yorker Magazine short story, “Two Men Arrive in a Village,” a story with social commentary set in an unnamed African village where atrocities are committed—an unfortunate common occurrence throughout the planet where war is waged.

Students will view supporting video and audio clips on understanding the purpose for Smith’s story. There is a link to a Ted Talk on the violence committed against women in Malawi. There is a link to interviews with Zadie Smith on analysis of the story and of injustices in detention camps with women who have been victims of violence.

The lessons feature an original prompt on narrative voice, social commentary and setting. Students will work on crafting a thesis sentence. Instructions and strategies are included on how to teach a rhetorical précis and the Socratic Seminar.

These lessons fit any Honors Literature class, Pre-AP, American Literature, World Literature or AP English Language or Literature class to prepare students for AP English Language exams, Common Core extended response assessments, American Literature Course exams, the SAT and ACT essay and critical thinking activities. I have added an addendum that describes how to adapt the lessons for ELL students.

The packet includes complete lessons, Common Core standards, essential and key questions. Now adaptable for ESOL classes.
