Product Description
Is the American Dream still attainable in modern America? This question is asked in a recent New York Times Room for Debate which is featured in these lessons as is the poem “Money” by Dana Gioia and an excerpt from A Raisin in the Sun where Walter Lee and his mother debate the value of money.

There are many links to videos, audios, and print resources for studying the concept of money and the American Dream. Also included is a TED Talk on the new American Dream. The students will also view a New Yorker video on the American Dream in 2016 and a New York Times video on where the American Dream lives.

The lesson features a synthesis prompt analyzing the argument about the American Dream in modern America. Students will craft an argumentative thesis sentence. Instructions and strategies are included on how to teach a SIFT analysis and hold an inner and outer Socratic Circle.

These lessons fit any Honors Literature class, Pre-AP, American Literature, American Literature or AP English Language or Literature class to prepare students for AP English Language exams, Common Core extended response assessments, American Literature Course exams, the SAT and ACT essay and critical thinking activities.

The packet includes complete lessons, Common Core standards, essential and key questions.
